Electrifying Our Future: AMP Leads the Charge in Industrial Heat Decarbonisation

As the UK accelerates towards net zero, electrification is becoming a critical part of the transition. But for it to truly work, it needs to be reliable, resilient, and grounded in practical solutions. That’s the focus of Electrifying Our Future , a new digital series by the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and Content With Purpose (CWP), which highlights twelve organisations driving change across the energy landscape.
AMP is proud to be featured, showcasing how we’re helping to decarbonise industrial heat through innovation and electrification.
Decarbonising Heat: One of Industry’s Toughest Challenges
While huge progress has been made in cleaning up electricity generation, industrial heat remains one of the hardest sectors to tackle. Many industries still rely on fossil fuels to produce high-temperature heat, which continues to drive up emissions.
At AMP, we’re helping change that. Our Energy Centre at Simpsons Malt combines renewable biomass with a first-of-its-kind electric boiler that’s powered by surplus wind energy. Together, these technologies will cut carbon emissions by 25,000 tonnes a year, showing how clean electricity can be used to produce low-carbon heat, even at scale.
Making the Most of Surplus Wind Power
Scotland’s wind farms generate vast amounts of renewable energy, but grid constraints often mean that power is wasted. When there’s too much electricity and nowhere for it to go, wind farms are paid to shut down – costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers.
Our Energy Centre provides a smarter solution. By using excess wind energy to power the electric boiler, we’re reducing waste, lowering emissions, and easing pressure on the grid. It’s a system that supports a more flexible, efficient, and resilient energy future.
A Blueprint for Wider Change
By combining proven low-carbon technologies with cutting-edge electrification, this project shows what’s possible for industry. We believe it offers a clear model for how other businesses can move away from fossil fuels and embrace cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.

AMP is featured in two videos as part of the Electrifying Our Future series:
Our CEO, Mark Tarry, talks about the electrification of heat and why flexible energy demand should be viewed as an opportunity, not a challenge.
A closer look at our Simpsons Malt Energy Centre, which turns surplus wind and sustainable biomass into dependable low-carbon heat for industry.
