25,000 tonnes of carbon savings per year

80% reduction in scope 1 emissions

Redefines local biomass as an energy store

£45 million project will make considerable carbon savings and sets the standard for low carbon malted barley production

AMP will develop, fund and operate a groundbreaking low carbon energy centre at Simpson’s Tweed Valley Maltings. This innovative facility will house cutting-edge electric and biomass boilers, setting a new standard for malted barley production, a critical ingredient of the Scotch Whisky sector. The energy centre will not only reduce scope 1 emissions by a staggering 80%, it also offers a solution to grid constraints. Our pioneering high-voltage electric boiler will be powered by wind energy that would otherwise be wasted during excess renewable energy generation.

The Vision:

Simpsons Malt, a certified B Corporation, is dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint. Malt processing is typically a high-energy demand process. To meet their 2030 target of Net Zero emissions, Simpsons needed a decarbonisation solution that would move the processing away from fossil fuels towards more sustainable energy sources.

The Solution

AMP partnered with Simpsons Malt to develop a state-of-the-art energy centre that will house electric and biomass boilers. Sustainable, locally sourced biomass fuel will provide the baseload decarbonisation and the electric boiler will kick-in when there is more wind energy being generated than the electricity system can use. This excess wind energy would otherwise be wasted. This ensures that the malt leaving the Tweed Valley Maltings, of which 90% is destined for the distilling industry, carries a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

“This exciting project is so groundbreaking as it repositions local biomass fuel as a low-cost energy storage solution that can provide baseload decarbonisation and maximise the use of renewable wind energy that would otherwise be turned off.”
