Battery Box Project for Local Authorities

AMP’s Battery Box Project:
Empowering Councils to Contribute to Net Zero Goals
AMP is proud to be working with 60 Local Authorities across the UK through our Battery Box project, offering councils an innovative solution to support their local decarbonisation goals while generating new income streams.
By hosting our energy storage systems, councils play an essential role in strengthening the local electricity grid and ensuring a sustainable, net-zero future for their communities.
Why Councils Are Ideal Partners for Energy Storage Projects
Local Authorities are well-placed to host Battery Boxes, thanks to their ownership of multiple sites across towns, cities, and rural areas. This provides an excellent opportunity to install energy storage systems across a number of locations, , scaling up the sustainable income streams for councils.
With over 300 councils having declared climate emergencies, the low carbon credentials of Battery Boxes align well with these goals. By partnering with AMP, councils can play their part for to the UK’s decarbonisation goals, helping reduce carbon emissions by approximately 160 tonnes every year per Battery Box installed, or close to 4,800 tonnes across their lifecycle.
How the Battery Box Project Works
We’ve designed the Battery Box project to be seamless and straightforward for councils. Here’s how we make it happen:
1. Site Identification
AMP identifies suitable land for installation
2. Verification
We liaise with the local electricity network to ensure that each site can be connected
3. Site Selection
A clear list of viable sites is provided to the council for review.
4. Review
Councils review the list and select preferred sites
5. Planning & Agreement
AMP submits planning applications and, once consent is granted, signs the lease agreement with the council.
6. Installation
AMP constructs the Battery Boxes; construction takes a few weeks and once constructed, the sites are remotely monitored and only require visitation once or twice a year.

It really is that simple! AMP undertake as much of the resource where possible to reduce the work expected of the council, and on top of that, we will also contribute towards the legal fees of the lease review. This means that Battery Boxes can be installed on Local Authority land at minimal resource and no cost to the council!
Success Story: Councils Leading the Way in Energy Storage
“We’re pleased to be one of the first councils to embrace this innovative way to capture excess energy at scale, and send it back to the grid. In return for offering up very small pieces of land to house the battery boxes, we are helping to strengthen our local electricity network. It’s another way that we are helping to protect and enhance our environment, by investing in low carbon energy”
– Councillor Philip Faircloth-Mutton, Suffolk County Council

Frequently Asked Questions
Do councils need to invest anything in the project?
No – the Battery Box project is fully funded, owned, and operated by AMP. Councils only need to enter into rental agreements, creating a sustainable, low-risk income stream with no upfront costs or financial commitment.
What types of sites are suitable for Battery Boxes?
We focus on underutilised or undevelopable land, such as grass verges or small plots that are not suitable for development. This helps maximise energy efficiency while enabling councils to monetise land that would otherwise go unused. Each Battery Box requires 25sqm of space (about the size of two parking spaces), and the site must be within 50m of a secondary substation for connection to the grid.
How does AMP identify potential sites?
AMP uses specialised software to assess the council’s estate and identify land holdings that are suitable for energy storage. We also factor in the proximity of secondary substations to ensure efficient grid connection. A list of potential sites is then compiled, taken to the electricity networks to understand which sites we can connect at, and shared with the council for review.
Do you sell us energy?
No – the Battery Boxes are not designed to sell energy to councils. Instead, they connect directly to the grid, reinforcing the local electricity network and supporting energy resilience in your communities.
When would we need to commit to the project?
There is no commitment for the council until the lease is signed. AMP handles all the early stages, including liaising with the electricity network and submitting planning applications, at no cost or risk to the council.
Will having Battery Boxes installed affect our supply of electricity?
No. Most of the Battery Boxes we install are located on land separate from any built council assets. In fact, these installations improve the capacity of local substations, and where possible, AMP will fund any required network upgrades, ensuring minimal disruption to electricity supply.
